Among his most cherished accomplishments Dr. Martinez was recognized for the quality of his doctoral dissertation with a nomination for the Tom L. Popejoy Dissertation Prize at UNM.

    ALBUQUERQUE, NY, March 04, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ — Joseph G. R. Martinez, PhD, retired Regents’ Professor from the University of New Mexico College of Education, was selected by Marquis Who’s Who for a prominent feature in the New Mexico regional edition of The New Yorker.

With over four decades of expertise in mathematics education, Joseph G. R. Martinez, PhD, was a Regents’ Professor at the University of New Mexico (UNM) College of Education prior to his retirement in 2012, having joined the faculty staff in 1986. Throughout his professional journey, he worked diligently to render the higher-level principles of mathematics in a way that was approachable for his students and always sought to exemplify the virtues of humility and patience as an educator.

Outside of his work at UNM, Dr. Martinez served as a professor of mathematics at such universities as the University of Albuquerque, the University of New Mexico-Valencia, and National College. At the University of Albuquerque, he availed himself on behalf of students as the director of the Reading Laboratory from 1978 to 1979. Additionally, he served on the editorial board of the Journal of College Reading and Learning and contributed to several scholarly publications, including the College of Mathematics Journal, Mathematics Teacher, and Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School. Likewise committed to proliferating his advice to colleagues in the field, he wrote “Math Without Fear: A Guide for Preventing Math Anxiety in Children,” alongside his wife, Nancy, and later published “Activities for Mathematical Thinking,” “Reading and Writing to Learn Mathematics,” and “Teaching Mathematics in Elementary and Middle School.”

Among his most cherished accomplishments, Dr. Martinez was recognized for the quality of his doctoral dissertation with a nomination for the Tom L. Popejoy Dissertation Prize at UNM. He was also inducted into the fraternity of Phi Beta Kappa in 1973. Outside of his professional pursuits, Dr. Martinez is most gratified to have lived according to the tenets of his Christian faith and to have known his late wife, whose model of compassion and intelligence will always serve as an inspiration.

Dr. Martinez initially attended college at UNM, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology and English in 1973. Following this achievement, he studied education and mathematics and graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1980.

Dr. Martinez earned a Certificate of Recognition from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in 1998. In the following years, he was bestowed with Merit I and Merit II awards from the College of Education at UNM from 1997 to 2009 and 2011 and was nominated as an Outstanding Teacher of the Year by UNM in 2010.
