The Motorola Razr will get a new edition of the foldable smartphone this year, confirmed Lenovo, which now owns the Motorola brand. Motorola introduced the Razr in 2004, one of the brand’s most famous mobile phones. It quickly gained notoriety and became one of the most popular flip phones of the 2000s. In 2020, Motorola renewed the Razr brand in a new foldable form to be one of the first smartphone manufacturers to release a device with a flexible screen.

Lenovo CEO Yuanqing Yang confirmed in one interview with CNBC at Mobile World Congress 2023 in Barcelona that the Motorola Razr is doing well. Over and beyond, Motorola will release the next edition of the foldable smartphone “very soon”. He said that the yet-to-be-released device was “much better.”

Yang offered few details about the upcoming smartphone, but explained that the handset’s hinge and applications would be improved. Several smartphone makers, from Samsung to Honor, have focused on the hinge to ensure it’s sturdy and doesn’t create a line within the mobile screen. Yang said that the next era of Razr devices would make advances here. A specific release date for the alleged Motorola Razr 2023 has not been announced, but it is current leaks have proposed a June release.

In the meantime, Motorola has also demonstrated a concept Motorola Rizr Sliding form factor device on the MWC 2023. Even when hands-on demos were presented, Motorola revealed little about the specs of this design.

The device shown at MWC 2023 reportedly features a 5-inch POLED display with a 15:9 aspect ratio, which is reportedly expandable to 6.5 inches (in a 22:9 aspect ratio). When rolled up, the unused portion of the display seems to wrap around the bottom and slide onto the back over the back panel. Once flipped, the rolled-up display on the back is meant to act as a secondary display that can show alerts, much like the outer display on a standard clamshell folding device.
