Mr. Held has established himself as a distinguished figure in spacecraft engineering over a career spanning more than four decades. As the mission chief engineer at BAE Systems in Broomfield, Colorado, since 2020, he brings an unparalleled depth of expertise to his role. In this capacity, Mr. Held is a staff consultant, most recently promoted to Tech Fellow for strategic initiatives, focusing on digital engineering, advanced manufacturing, and new business development. His work also involves serving as a spacecraft architect, where his contributions have significantly advanced the field.

Before his current position, Mr. Held dedicated over three decades to Lockheed Martin’s Space and Missile division from 1981 to 2020, culminating in the position of Director of Mechanical and Propulsion Engineering. His tenure at the defense and space manufacturing organization was marked by groundbreaking work in interplanetary spacecraft analysis, design and build, contributing to numerous missions exploring Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Mr. Held also played a pivotal role in constructing and launching the Cassini spacecraft for its 7 year mission to Saturn, the Stardust spacecraft, which collected and returned samples from a comet’s tail to Earth and as a member of the Space Shuttle Challenger investigation Team.

In addition to his civilian career, Mr. Held served with distinction in the U.S. Navy Reserves from 1986 to 2010, retiring with the rank of captain. His military service further honed his leadership and technical skills, contributing to his professional achievements in spacecraft engineering.

Mr. Held’s academic foundation was laid at Missouri University of Science and Technology, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering in 1981. Beyond his professional endeavors, he spent over five years actively involved on the engineering advisory board at Colorado State University.

Mr. Held’s commitment to advancing the field is further evidenced by his receipt of several prestigious awards, including the Silver Snoopy Award in 2016, bestowed to NASA employees and contractors for outstanding achievements related to human flight safety or mission success. In light of his military service, he was decorated with a Navy Commendation Medal, Joint Services Commendation Medal, and Defense Meritorious Service Award from the U.S. Navy. Mr. Held attributes his success to the network of experts he has been able to draw from, rely on, and collaborate with throughout his career.

Looking ahead toward future opportunities, Mr Held is interested in establishing a Spacecraft Propulsion Consulting company in the near future. This new venture aims to expand his already extensive expertise in spacecraft propulsion systems and contribute further to the field he is deeply passionate about.
