Prior to his current roles, Dr. Gottlieb was the associate vice president for novel clinical trial design and digital health, AI, and immunology solutions at Lilly from 2018 to 2021 and contributed as a drug development consultant for the company from 2017 until 2018. He has previously held significant positions such as the vice president for clinical development and regulatory affairs at Synthetic Biologics Inc. between 2015 and 2017 and the senior medical director and gastroenterology therapeutic strategy lead at IQVIA from 2013 to 2015. Earlier in his career, he was an FDA medical officer and professor of medicine from 2010 until 2013 and practiced as a gastroenterologist in private practice with Providence Health Services between 1999 and 2010. During his career, he also provided notable military service as a commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve Medical Corps from 2002 to 2018, receiving the Army Commendation Medal.

Dr. Gottlieb’s academic credentials are extensive and diverse, which include completing coursework in medical science at Heidelberg University in 1983 and earning an MD-PhD from the University of Bonn in 1987. In 2000, he earned a Master of Business Administration from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, followed by a command and staff diploma in military and strategic leadership from the U.S. Naval War College in 2008, and a Master of Science in biotechnology and bioinformatics from Johns Hopkins University in 2012. He subsequently completed an executive education course on global negotiation at Harvard Law School and earned a Juris Doctor from the Northwestern California University School of Law, both in 2021. He is currently a Master of Laws candidate in tax and estate planning at Golden Gate University.

Certified by the Medical Board of California as a physician and surgeon, Dr. Gottlieb is also board-certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is also admitted to the State Bar of California.
