She currently holds the position of managing director of accounting advisory and outsourcing at BDO USA, where she has been serving since 2022. In this role, she is the national practice leader for higher education and manages a diverse client base, including acting as a fractional chief financial officer for nonprofit organizations in Washington, DC, and providing similar services for universities as a thought partner and trusted advisor. Her responsibilities encompass overseeing and supporting teams, managing day-to-day financial operations, and offering career advice to BDO staff. Additionally, she engages in thought leadership by presenting to peer groups, publishing case studies, writing blogs and effectively communicating essential topics in the nonprofit and higher education sectors.

Prior to her current role, Ms. Marten served as a peer mentor at Heather Chauvin Coaching, a critical skill she cultivated between 2019 and 2023. During this period, she provided guidance and support to peers, leveraging her extensive experience in leadership positions to help others navigate their professional journeys. Ms. Marten also facilitates several women’s groups and offer workshops and mentorship to students, executives, entrepreneurs and parents seeking greater work life balance.

From 2019 to 2022, Ms. Marten held the positions of interim chief operating officer, chief financial officer and finance director at Carnegie Science, a one billion scientific research endowment. In these roles, she was instrumental in managing the institution’s financial and research operations, digital transformation, and strategic planning, ensuring fiscal responsibility and operational efficiency.

Ms. Marten’s career also includes significant contributions to George Washington University, where she served as finance director and senior administrator in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences from 2011 to 2019. Her tenure at the university was marked by her dedication to improving financial and research processes, expansion of the Health Sciences Programs online and at the Ashburn, Virginia campus and supporting the institution’s mission through effective financial management.

Ms. Marten’s academic achievements include a Master of Business Administration in financial management from American University Kogod School of Business and a Bachelor of Arts in business and communication from the University of Pittsburgh. She attributes her success to being the first in her family to attend college which has influenced her drive, and has been a key factor in her professional accomplishments and desire to support the higher education industry today.

In addition to her professional roles, Ms. Marten is an active member of the National Association of College and University Business Officers. She has also served on the boards of Soroptimist and Dress for Success Triangle NC, demonstrating her commitment to civic-minded organizations.

Outside of her career, Ms. Marten enjoys spending time with her daughter, hiking, meditating, playing the guitar and writing. Looking ahead, she aims to continue creating comprehensive solutions and toolkits to facilitate the evolution of contemporary higher education. Her ambition includes establishing a dedicated team that leverages cutting-edge AI technology to address staffing challenges while imparting knowledge within the industry concerning effective remote work execution.
