ORLANDO, Fla. – Mark Long is often called the “godfather of reality TV.” He starred in season one of MTV’s “Road Rules” in 1995 and is an early pioneer in the genre.

“Reality TV has come a long way since its inception, and being part of this journey from the beginning has been nothing short of incredible,” said Mark Long. “‘Road Rules’ wasn’t just a show; it was a life-changing experience that continues to influence my life today.”

Long is now competing in the 40th season of “The Challenge: Battle of the Eras.” This season brings back cast members from different eras. Long is the only person to have competed in four different decades of the show.

“Competing in ‘The Challenge’ for four decades is a testament to the show’s enduring appeal and my passion for the competition,” said Long. “And, yeah, they asked me this past season on season 40, some of the youngsters, asked ‘When was Road Rules out?’ And I said ‘95 and they’re like, I was born in ‘96! And I was just like, ‘Oh my goodness.’ So I could probably be a lot of their fathers easily, yeah.”

Maintaining fitness is crucial for those in the demanding reality TV industry. Long emphasized the importance of integrating fitness into daily life, making it a habit rather than a stressor. He refers to his daily morning workout as his “mental church.”

“Consistency and gradual progress are key. It’s about making fitness a habit, not a source of stress,” he said.

Now, Long has a production company called Two Waves Entertainment. He’s doing a seminar in Orlando in December called Reality 360 geared toward aspiring reality TV stars.

“We’re going to have casting directors, producers, reality stars, and we’re going to talk about how to get if you want to get into reality, how to get into reality. We’re going to have secrets from producers, secrets from casting directors. So it’s going to be a very intimate 100-person gathering up at the celebration at the Meliá. But I’m excited about that. That’s kind of like my little baby pet project,” Long said. “Aspiring reality TV contestants should be authentic and consistent. That’s the key to making a lasting impression Reality TV is here to stay, and its evolution is a testament to its enduring appeal and the connection it creates with audiences.”

You can watch news episodes of “The Challenge: Battle of the Eras” every Wednesday at 8 p.m. on MTV.
