Brazil become the first team to be eliminated after leading 1-0 in extra time in a World Cup knockout game

NEW DELHI: Brazil‘s performance in the knockouts of the FIFA World Cup continued to haunt them as the five-time champions advanced to another quarter-final after sinking at the every four-year event Croatia 2:4 on penalties on Friday.
Brazil have now lost four of their last five World Cup quarter-finals, all to European opponents, and also became the first team to take a 1-0 lead in extra time in a World Cup knockout game.

The game ended 1-1 after extra time, with both goals coming in the remaining 30 minutes. neymar scored late in the first half of extra time to put Brazil ahead but Croatia equalised Bruno Petkovic scored in the 117th and forced the game into a penalty shootout.
Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic saved the penalty in Rodrygo’s first attempt and Marquinhos later hit the post. Livakovic had already scored some crucial stops as the teams drew 0-0 in regular time and 1-1 in overtime.
Nikola Vlasic, Lovro Majer Luke Modric and Mislav Orsic converted their penalties for Croatia, while Casemiro and Pedro scored for Brazil.
Five of Croatia’s last six World Cup games have gone into overtime, including a penalty shoot-out win over Japan in the Round of 16 in Qatar. The team has won eight of the tournament’s last ten knockout games.
