His career is marked by significant contributions to Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the college of medicine at The Ohio State University. Since 2010, Dr. Martino has served as an emeritus professor at The Ohio State University, where he continues to influence future generations of medical professionals through his extensive knowledge and experience.
Beginning his tenure at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in 1979, Dr. Martino assumed the role of pediatric anesthesiologist. His expertise and dedication led to his appointment as department chair of pediatric anesthesiology and pain medicine, where he played a crucial role in advancing the hospital’s programs. During his tenure, Dr. Martino also spearheaded a comprehensive initiative to enhance one of these esteemed programs, developing a rigorous accreditation process with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. This effort laid the foundation for a distinguished pediatric fellowship program.
Dr. Martino’s educational journey began at West Virginia University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in education and a Master of Science in bacteriology. He then pursued a Doctor of Medicine on campus. His postgraduate training included a surgical internship and residency in neurosurgery at West Virginia University Hospital followed by a residency in anesthesiology/pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. The strong educational foundation provided by his parents, both esteemed educators in West Virginia, played a significant role in shaping his academic pursuits and professional success.
In addition to his clinical roles, Dr. Martino has been an active member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Anesthesiology, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Board of Anesthesiology and the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. These affiliations reflect his commitment to staying at the forefront of advancements in his field.
Dr. Martino honorably served his country in the military with the U.S. Army as Assistant Chief of Anesthesiology and Operative Services/Director of Resident Education at Letterman Army Medical Center at The Presidio of San Francisco.
Recognized for his contributions to education and patient care, Dr. Martino received an Education Award for Excellence in Teaching and special recognition for 45 years of dedicated service at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
