His strategic insights were instrumental during his tenure as worldwide industry strategist for pharmaceuticals at Microsoft from 2007 to 2010 and as vice president of enterprise solutions at CambridgeSoft in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from 2005 to 2007.
Dr. Potenzone’s career highlight occurred during his time at Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), a division of the American Chemical Society, where he served as director of research for new product development from 1992 to 1997. His team created SciFinder, an innovative tool that empowered scientists to independently search through complex systems without traditional library assistance. This initiative addressed an unmet need for accessible and self-directed research tools, proving invaluable to the scientific community despite initial criticism from information professionals.
Dr. Potenzone’s academic achievements have played a crucial role in his professional success. He earned a Bachelor of Science in biophysics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1973, a Master of Science in macromolecular science from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1975, and a Doctor of Philosophy in macromolecular science from the same institution in 1978. He is also a member of the American Chemical Society.
Dr. Potenzone attributes his success to always pursuing new and innovative endeavors, particularly in creating new chemistry tools. During his time at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the 1980s, he was involved in establishing the National Institutes of Health EPA chemical information system, which aimed to increase the visibility and accessibility of chemical information previously scattered across various government databases.
