Drawing on years of professional experience in aerospace engineering and anesthesiology, Dr. Barker serves as professor emeritus at the University of Arizona. In addition to his work at the University, he channels years of engineering and medical expertise into his work as a consultant and chief science officer for Masimo Corporation. In addition to giving anesthesiology and engineering lectures, Dr. Barker maintains industrial connections and liaises with patient safety organizations.

Previously, Dr. Barker taught anesthesiology and aerospace engineering from 1995 until 2017 and served as the head of the Department of Anesthesiology between 1995 and 2013. During the early stages of his career, he gained valuable expertise in education as an associate professor of anesthesiology at the University of California, Irvine. He also leveraged his expertise with the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Northwest Anesthesia Seminars. Before establishing himself in the industry, he earned a Bachelor of Science in physics from Harvey Mudd College. Subsequently, Dr. Barker received a Master of Science in engineering science and a PhD in engineering from the California Institute of Technology, and an MD from the University of Miami.

To remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Barker has aligned himself with the California and American Societies of Anesthesiologists, the Society for Technology in Anesthesia, the Society of Academic Anesthesia, and the Orange County Medical Association. In conjunction with his work, he contributed to various industry and community organizations, including the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, Toys for Tots, the American Cancer Society, and the Patient Safety Movement Foundation, where he sat on the board of directors.

Given his professional achievements, Dr. Barker won the Friends of FAER Award through the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research, the J.S. Gravenstein Award from the Society for Technology and Anesthesia, and a Distinguished Alumni Award through Harvey Mudd College. Additionally, he won the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Innovations and Applications of Monitoring of Perfusion, Oxygenation, and Ventilation. While his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Barker takes the most pride in receiving the FAER Award at the annual ASA meeting in San Francisco.

Though hard work and dedication have brought him far in his career, Dr. Barker credits his success to continuous self-improvement, an insatiable thirst for knowledge, and his ability to transform his education into tangible benefits for himself and society. Looking ahead, he intends to continue doing what he loves. Ultimately, Dr. Barker wants to continue teaching and traveling with his wife.
