Ms. Miller, founder of Trailways Camps, Inc., has dedicated her career to creating inclusive environments for adults with special needs. Having established her nonprofit organization as a beacon of hope and adventure for individuals and their families, her journey into this field began in 2007 when she and her husband established the camps in memory of their son, who passed away due to a rare disease compounded by multiple disabilities. This heartfelt tribute has since evolved into a thriving initiative that fosters meaningful relationships and lasting memories by providing fun and exciting camping experiences for adults with special needs and respite for their families and caregivers.
Leveraging her former experience, Ms. Miller served as the Chief Executive Officer of Easter Seals serving Central Texas for four years. Her leadership there was marked by a commitment to understanding the unique challenges faced by individuals with developmental and other disabilities, translating this understanding into practical solutions. Ms. Miller’s expertise in this area is widely recognized and led to her appointment as Chair of the Texas Rehabilitation Council in 2001.
In 1995, as Deputy Director of the State Department of Civil Rights, Ms. Miller worked diligently to advocate for equal opportunities and rights for all individuals. Her earlier career also included a decade-long tenure as Chief Executive Officer of the Monroe County Community Mental Health Board System from 1982 to 1992.
Ms. Miller received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Michigan State University in 1965 and a Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan in 1971. As a licensed social worker, with lifetime certification tenure, she has utilized her academic training to address the needs of those with disabilities.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Ms. Miller is actively involved in civic organizations. She founded the Robert V. & Benjamin G. Miller Fund for Trailways Camps in 2007, now a Legacy Fund, and has held roles such as liaison for the Spanish Speaking Commission and chair of the Michigan Women’s Commission. Ms. Miller’s commitment to community service extends to being part of Lion’s International Service Organization and service as the Director of Women’s Ministry at Sanibel Community Church. The Fort Myers, News Press recognized her as a Finalist for its Heroes of the Year Award in 2017.
Ms. Miller was honored with the Hal Madden, Outstanding Leadership in Community Mental Health Award in 1994, recognizing her exceptional contributions to the field. Her mother played an influential role in shaping her values and dedication to service, inspiring her through resilience and unconditional love.
