Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Longobardi, a distinguished expert in research integrity and publication ethics, has made significant contributions to the field of scientific publishing. As the director of publishing ethics and conduct at the IEEE since 2022, he coordinates with his team on various projects related to technology and tool development. He is also heavily involved in the general publishing industry, moderating panels on emerging policies. His role underscores his commitment to enhancing transparency and accountability within scientific communication.
Prior to his current position, Dr. Longobardi served as executive editor at AIP Publishing from 2018 to 2022. During this time, he played a pivotal role in shaping editorial policies and practices. His tenure as journal manager for Physical Review Fluids at the American Physical Society from 2016 to 2017 further honed his skills in managing scientific publications. Additionally, he held the position of assistant editorial director at the American Physical Society from 2014 to 2018, where he was instrumental in overseeing editorial processes.
Dr. Longobardi’s career began with roles that laid a strong foundation for his expertise. From 2012 to 2018, he was an associate editor for Physical Review B at the American Physical Society. His earlier experience as a research associate at Dartmouth College from 2011 to 2012 and as a Marie Curie postdoctoral research fellow at the Second University of Naples from 2009 to 2011 provided him with valuable insights into academic research.
Before entering the workforce, Dr. Longobardi earned a Bachelor of Arts in physics from University of Naples Federico II in 2001, followed by a Master of Arts in physics from Stony Brook University in 2004. Five years later, he completed his Doctor of Philosophy in physics at Stony Brook University. Beyond his education, he attributes his success to perseverance, determination and a willingness to adapt and grow along the way.
Dr. Longobardi is most proud of his rapid ascent within the organizations he worked with, transitioning from an unfamiliar face to trusted leaders and volunteers and cluster broker within just one year. Within his first year at IEEE, he helped implement new policies that prioritized transparency and accountability in their communication strategies, especially around correcting the scholarly record. This initiative not only transformed the policies within months but also introduced a more effective approach to informing the public about ongoing investigations.
In addition, Dr. Longobardi takes pride in the legacy his father built as a union organizer in Italy, along with the meaningful work his wife, an immigration lawyer working for a nonprofit, accomplishes every day. As his father enjoys his retirement, Dr. Longobardi values the lasting impact of their family’s efforts and the lessons he learned from his upbringing.
In his personal life, Dr. Longobardi enjoys gardening, baking, rock climbing and spending time with his family. He is also involved in civic organizations as a volunteer for the Science, Technology and Medicine Publisher Association and a volunteer at local asylum shelters in New York City.
Looking ahead in his career, Dr. Longobardi envisions addressing significant challenges in scientific publishing by fostering public trust in peer-reviewed research. His ambition is to create an environment where published content is seen as credible and reliable, ultimately restoring confidence in scientific literature.
