Dr. Numa Markee Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who’s Who

Dr. Numa Markee channels years of expertise into his work with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

CHAMPAIGN, IL, January 30, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ — Marquis Who’s Who, the world’s premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Dr. Numa Markee with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Numa Markee celebrates many years’ experience in his professional network and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

As the child of diplomats, Dr. Markee has visited many countries, cultivating an interest in diverse culinary traditions and languages. Fluent in French, Italian, English, and Spanish, he began his career as a teaching assistant at College Rousseau before joining the Institut Alg rien du P trole and Centre Anglo-Africain de Langues as director and teacher. He pursued higher education while fulfilling his directorial duties, earning a Bachelor of Arts in French and literature from the University College London. In the ensuing years, Dr. Markee gained valuable expertise in various teaching positions with the Regent School of English and the University of California, Los Angeles, from which he completed a Master of Arts in English as a second language.

A testament to his dedication to education, Dr. Markee honed his skills through numerous educational and editorial positions with Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana, Khartoum Polytechnic, Zemi Corporation, the University of California, Los Angeles, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the English for Specific Purposes Journal, the Journal of Interactional Linguistics, and the U.S. Department of State. Additionally, he completed a PhD in applied linguistics at the University of California, Los Angeles. Throughout his career, Dr. Markee also edited and authored several articles in such publications as the International Review of Applied Linguistics, the Modern Language Journal, TESOL Quarterly, and the Cambridge University Press.

Drawing on decades of industry experience, Dr. Markee excels as an emeritus research professor and associate professor of linguistics, French, Italian, and SLATE at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Although officially retired in 2018, he maintains an active research agenda and has multiple articles scheduled for publication in 2024. Likewise, Dr. Markee organizes conferences on behalf of the University and is working on his linguistic autobiography, titled, “Memoirs of a Cultural Mongrel.”

Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Markee is a member of the English Language Teaching Assistants’ Fulbright national screening committee. Given his professional achievements, he won the INSPIRE Grant to visit Stockholm University. While his career has been filled with highlights, he takes the most pride in co-founding two sub-disciplines within linguistics: the diffusion of innovations and the social approach to second-language acquisition within the domain of conversion analysis. His goal is to converge the two disciplines by persuading his colleagues in conversation analysis to look deeper into the nuances of their methodology, particularly regarding its application to areas where conversation analysis remains scarce.

Though hard work and dedication have brought him far in his career, Dr. Markee credits his success to his upbringing in a diplomatic family and his linguistic skills. Looking ahead, he intends to enter the second part of his conversation analysis career, embark on another African safari, and publish a collection of photographs capturing the essence of his travels.
