JACKSONVILLE, FL, February 03, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ — Annie Belle Henry, PhD, professor emeritus of Bemidji State University, was selected by Marquis Who’s Who for a prominent feature in the Florida Edition of The Wall Street Journal, published on December 4, 2024.

Dr. Henry celebrates a four-decade career in education. From 1988 to her retirement in 2008, she served as an associate professor at Bemidji State University, and following her retirement, the university honored her with the title of professor emeritus.

Dr. Henry became involved in her profession because of the influence of her parents, both of whom were denied education, with her father only finishing third grade and her mother eighth grade. Despite the difficulties of navigating segregation, she continued her education, completing high school and attending Edward Waters College, now known as Edward Waters University. After earning a Bachelor of Science from the university in 1964, she went on to Florida A&M University, where she received a Master of Arts in 1969. She completed her education in 1988 with the receipt of a Doctor of Philosophy from Florida State University.

To help people like her parents, Dr. Henry began teaching after completing her bachelor’s degree, taking a position as a secondary school teacher with the Florida Department of Education. She then moved to Saint Thomas, a part of the United States Virgin Islands. Working for the U.S. Virgin Islands, she served as a secondary social studies teacher and a department chair from 1968 to 1983. Transitioning to work in higher education, she joined Bemidji State University in 1988.

In addition to her career as a professor, Dr. Henry is a celebrated author. In 2011, she published her memoir, “The Girl from Jacksonville Who Dared to Dream, Hope and Believe!” and six years later released her next book, “Feeling Like a Stranger in Your Hometown? Ask the Girl from Jacksonville!” Proceeds from her writing benefit a scholarship fund at Bemidji State University. She is tied deeply to Bemidji State University and her alma mater, Edward Waters University, and continues supporting its endeavors, having provided a substantial donation to the Edward Waters College Football Program. For her financial support, the university named the Dr. Annie B. Henry Football Locker Room complex in her honor.

In recognition of her work with disaster relief in 1997, the American Red Cross credited her as an integral volunteer. In addition, she has received numerous awards and honors, including the Skipping Stones Honor Awards, the Women’s Study Award Merit from Bemidji State University and an honorary award from the Northwoods Coalition for Battered Women. She is a member of the National Education Association, the Minnesota Black Association and Phi Delta Kappa International.

Of all her career achievements, Dr. Henry considers her most notable to be finding a way to pay her success forward, a practice she learned from her mother. She attributes her success to her parents and the community in which she was raised — an environment that emphasized the importance of helping others.

Over the coming years, Dr. Henry intends to continue impacting the lives of young people. In addition to her work as an educator, she frequently volunteers in her community.
