He currently holds the title of regents’ professor emeritus at Northern Arizona University and has been associated with the institution since 1998. He initially served as a regents’ professor until 2010 and then transitioned to his emeritus role. His tenure at Northern Arizona University was marked by his dedication to advancing the study of animal behavior and his involvement in developing educational programs.
Before his time at Northern Arizona University, Dr. Drickamer spent 11 years at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, where he served as a professor and department chair from 1987 to 1991. During this period, he led the Department of Zoology for four years and contributed significantly to the academic community through his leadership and research initiatives.
Dr. Drickamer’s academic journey began at Williams College, where he was a professor from 1972 to 1987 and served as Department Chair 1987-1991. His 15-year tenure at Williams College was marked by his administrative roles, including running the science center and chairing the science committee. Over the years, he also served in various editorial roles for publications such as Animal Behaviour, the Journal of Comparative Psychology, and the American Midland Naturalist. These experiences laid the foundation for his future endeavors in academia and research.
A member of esteemed organizations such as the Animal Behavior Society (Fellow), the International Ethological Committee, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Drickamer’s work in animal behavior earned him the Distinguished Animal Behaviorist Award from the Animal Behavior Society in 2010.
Dr. Drickamer’s educational background includes a Doctor of Philosophy in zoology from Michigan State University, completed in 1970 on a National Defense Education Act fellowship. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Oberlin College, obtained in 1967. He was an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow at North Carolina State University in 1970-1971, His academic achievements have been instrumental in shaping his successful career and are attributed to the values instilled in him during his upbringing.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Drickamer is actively involved in civic activities. He has volunteered as a contributor at Oberlin College and as a volunteer instructor at Ohio State Penitentiary, where he taught a course called “Employment Readiness.” This program was part of a comprehensive curriculum aimed at helping incarcerated individuals develop skills for reintegration into society.
In addition to his academic and civic pursuits, Dr. Drickamer is an accomplished author with numerous publications to his name. He has written nine history books and several textbooks on animal behavior and mammalogy. Currently, he is working on a novel and an autobiography. His passion for postal history is reflected in his first book. Born in Ann Arbor, Dr. Drickamer enjoys collecting stamps, playing golf, and conducting research. He is married to Judith Sellers and has two stepchildren and one son.
