A self-motivated and innovative professional in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Akkiraju currently serves as an associate director at IQVIA Laboratories, where he began in 2024. With a career spanning 16 years, Dr. Akkiraju has made significant contributions to drug discovery and analytical sciences. At IQVIA Laboratories, he oversees seven direct reports. Similarly, he is responsible for developing new technologies to analyze clinical samples, determining drug impacts on specific targets, and advancing scientific solutions to meet pharmaceutical clients’ needs.
Before joining IQVIA Laboratories, Dr. Akkiraju was an associate principal scientist/associate director at Atomwise from 2023 to 2024. At Atomwise, he focused on AI-driven drug discovery in oncology, central nervous system disorders and immunology. His tenure at Alkermes in Massachusetts from 2020 to 2023 saw him progress from senior scientist to associate principal scientist, where he honed his expertise in drug development processes. Prior to Alkermes, Dr. Akkiraju led a group at WuXi AppTec in Cranbury, New Jersey, from 2018 to 2020, where he played a pivotal role in scientific research and development.
Dr. Akkiraju’s career began with roles as scientist II at Sanofi Genzyme in Waltham, Massachusetts, from 2017 to 2018. His postdoctoral research at Columbia University from 2016 to 2017 laid the foundation for his future endeavors in life sciences. Earlier in his career, he served as a research assistant at the University of Delaware from 2010 to 2016 and as a manufacturing associate II at BD from 2009 to 2010. His journey from early stage drug development to late stage regulatory workis a testament to his dedication and pursuit of knowledge.
Throughout his career, Dr. Akkiraju has been actively involved with several industry-related organizations, including the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, the Pharmaceutical & BioScience Society, Workshops on Recent Issues in Bioanalysis, ACMB, the American Society for Mass Spectrometry and the Biophysical Society.
Dr. Akkiraju’s academic background includes a Doctor of Philosophy in biology from the University of Delaware, which he earned in 2016, and a Bachelor of Technology in biotechnology from Anna University in Chennai, India, which he received in 2009. He attributes his success to his father, who was his first mentor and instilled values of diversity, resilience and excellence. His educational achievements have been instrumental in shaping his career trajectory and accomplishments.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Dr. Akkiraju is committed to civic engagement through volunteering with organizations such as monthly food drives, Habitat for Humanity, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and meditation groups for mental health awareness. He has received accolades such as the Young Investigator Award from the Journal of Orthopaedic Research and has contributed extensively to scientific literature with numerous publications on topics ranging from small molecule design to cartilage regeneration.
Outside his professional life, Dr. Akkiraju enjoys connecting with like-minded individuals and consulting while engaging in sports such as tennis, volleyball and basketball. He is also a devoted father to one son.
