A seasoned professional engineer, Mr. Lavier has dedicated 25 years to the field of electrical and electronics engineering. He currently serves as a senior principal architect at Microsoft, where he plays a pivotal role in architecting systems for artificial intelligence clusters within Azure. His responsibilities include collaborating closely with the company’s silicon, development and internal AI teams to ensure the construction of optimal systems. His knowledge and expertise are instrumental in guiding the development team in creating new and innovative products.

Prior to reaching his current role, Mr. Lavier was a hardware design engineer and architect at Meta from 2019 to 2024. During this period, he contributed to groundbreaking research initiatives and system designs for future augmented reality and virtual reality platforms. Before joining Meta, he held several key positions at Microsoft from 2012 to 2019. As a principal hardware engineering lead and manager for Azure CSI from 2014 to 2019, he was instrumental in building the first internal hardware team within the Azure division. Additionally, he served as a senior hardware engineer and senior hardware technical lead and design manager, during which he helped to advance the company’s cloud server infrastructure.

Mr. Lavier’s career began at Hewlett-Packard, where he worked from 2000 to 2012 as a senior electrical engineer and systems hardware engineer. His early experience also included positions as a test and tool integration lead, electrical hardware engineer, VLSI design engineer and electrical engineer in technology development operations. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his ability to bring complex projects to fruition, notably contributing to Project Catapult within Azure.

To stay aware of the latest developments within his field, Mr. Lavier is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). His academic background includes a Master of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Washington in 2016 and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Idaho in 1999. He is also certified as a professional engineer in the state of Oregon.

Known for his contributions as a civic-minded citizen, Mr. Lavier is actively involved in civic activities as a scoutmaster with Scouts BSA under Scouting America. In addition to his storied creativity and leadership within the workplace, he has played a key role in creating and securing patents for groundbreaking products and concepts such as failure detection in a voltage regulator, a fault detection circuit, an integrated sensing and display system and several more electrical engineering innovations.

In his personal life, Mr. Lavier is happily married and a proud father of two children.
