Mr. Barefoot is a retired attorney with over 35 years of experience and a multifaceted career as a historian, author, public speaker and magician. Since 1976, he has been associated with Daniel W. Barefoot, where he performs magic at clubs and shares his expertise in writing and history. As an accomplished author and public speaker, Mr. Barefoot has published 12 books, including “Spirits of ’76: Ghost Stories of the American Revolution” and “Hark: The Sound of Tar Heel Voices.” He also contributed to the “Encyclopedia of North Carolina.”

A career in law marked by significant success, Mr. Barefoot began as an attorney at law in Lincolnton, North Carolina, where he practiced from 1976 to 2012. During his legal career, he was known for his contributions as a remarkable death penalty-qualified attorney representing clients facing serious charges. Additionally, Mr. Barefoot dedicated a decade to serving as the head attorney for the City of Lincolnton between 1998 and 2007.

Mr. Barefoot’s educational background laid a strong foundation for his diverse career. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. In 1976, he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was admitted to practice by the North Carolina Bar Association.

Beyond his legal practice, Mr. Barefoot was the president of the Lincoln County Bar Association and the Judicial District 27-B Bar Association. He is also a professional member of the North Caroliniana Society, the Society of American Magicians and the International Brotherhood of Magicians. Furthermore, Mr. Barefoot is a life member of the International Magicians Society.

Mr. Barefoot’s civic involvement throughout his career has included involvement with various organizations. He is the president of the Lincoln County Public Education Foundation and The Lincoln County Historic Properties Commission. He also serves as an elder at the Presbyterian Church in Lincoln and participates in lay ministry activities. Previously, Mr. Barefoot was a member of the USS North Carolina Battleship Commission and held leadership roles in multiple committees within the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1998 to 2002.

In light of his literary achievements, Mr. Barefoot earned the North Carolina Society of Historians’ recognition as Historian of the Year in 1998. He attributes much of his success to his wife, who has been instrumental in helping him achieve his goals. Looking ahead, Mr. Barefoot plans to continue practicing magic and writing while further developing the state’s history alongside his wife.
