Mario Nappa celebrated for more than 30 years of expertise in the chemical industry
He is a prolific inventor with over 226 U.S. patents and 22 publications in referred journals, holding the most patents in Delaware over the past 50 years.
LEESBURG, FL, March 03, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ — Mario Nappa has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Nappa, a distinguished chemist with over three decades of experience, has made significant contributions to the field of organofluorine chemistry. As president and chief executive officer of Mario Nappa Consulting LLC since 2016, he has been instrumental in troubleshooting chemical processes and providing consultation services in organofluorine catalysis, business development and chemistry.
Prior to establishing his consulting firm, Dr. Nappa held various roles in the industry, including as a homogeneous catalysis and organofluorine chemist for several companies beginning in 1981. He also served as a chemist at Chemours Chemical Company, where he primarily worked on next generation refrigerants, foaming agents, fire extinguishants and solvents. In addition to new molecule development, he participated in commercialization teams and was often a key resource in troubleshooting commercial catalyst manufacturing problems for the majority of fluorochemical products offered by Chemours. Prior, he served as an organofluorine chemist at DuPont Company, contributing to their Central Research and Development Program by developing fluorinated biomimetic catalysts for selective oxidations.
Dr. Nappa’s career is distinguished by several notable achievements, such as generating significant revenue through his inventions, which have amounted to billions of dollars. He was responsible for developing around 10 large-scale commercial processes, particularly for refrigerants. Despite environmental concerns leading to the phasing out of some of these compounds, Dr. Nappa continually reinvented his processes to replace global-warming substances with alternatives. Toward the end of his career, after Chemours split from DuPont, he mastered advanced density functional theory and molecular calculations within six months and taught 24 colleagues these skills.
Dr. Nappa’s academic background laid a strong foundation for his professional success, earning a Bachelor of Science from Rutgers College in 1974, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy from Rutgers University in 1979. He then completed postdoctoral coursework at the University of Chicago, where he demonstrated perseverance by successfully completing a challenging project that had stumped previous postdocs. Overall, he acknowledges that making the most of the opportunities and persevering through obstacles greatly contributed to his success.
Throughout his career, Dr. Nappa has been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Winthrop-Sears Medal of Chemistry in 2015 and the DuPont Lavoisier Medal in 2013. He is also a prolific inventor with over 226 U.S. patents and 22 publications in referred journals, holding the most patents in Delaware over the past 50 years. His membership in industry-related organizations, such as the American Chemical Society and Chemistry Club, further underscores his commitment to advancing the field.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Nappa enjoys a fulfilling personal life with his spouse of more than 48 years and their two children. Born in Newark, NJ, he finds joy in bicycling, fishing, woodworking, videography and enjoying retirement. Looking ahead, he aims to continue consulting with young professionals and guiding them in their careers. He is passionate about mentoring young engineers and helping them gain insights from his perspective as a chemist working alongside engineers.
Additionally, Dr. Nappa has developed an interest in interacting with local governments on planning and building projects in central Florida. Actively participating in meetings to discuss new developments, he helps ensure that infrastructure keeps pace with rapid growth.
