One of The best password managers around has announced a new feature that allows its users to log into their vaults with a master password.
Passwordless login instead allows users to secure theirs dashlane account with what they use to lock their smart device, such as B. their PIN or biometric data, which usually means your fingerprint or your face.
The platform was the first to find space master key, the new passwordless technology being endorsed by big tech companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft to name a few. In the same vein, Dashlane has now expanded its use of passwordless technology to self-secure its users’ vaults.
Not quite passkeys
Credential security is more important than ever as the number of digital accounts we own today continues to soar. But that also means that the problems surrounding passwords have multiplied. Dashlane cites a report by Gartner that 20-50% of all helpdesk calls are related to password resets.
Although password managers are designed to eliminate the most common password-related problem, a master password is still required to access your saved passwords yourself, and it needs to be stored.
Dashlane hopes there’s one less worry in your credential world with the optional removal of a Master Password.
Dashlane claims that its new passwordless method of accessing your account is phishing resistant as there is no phishing phrase. It also states: “Passwordless accounts that don’t suffer from the vulnerabilities of traditional passwords and multi-factor authentication (MFA). This not only strengthens the overall security posture, but also removes friction for users and provides users with a more accessible way to access their accounts and protect their personal information.”
While it doesn’t use exactly the same technology as passkeys — despite Dashlane becoming a board member of the FIDO Alliance, which sets the standards for passkey technology — the new passwordless login still uses cryptographic keys. These are “generated using Elliptic-Curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) to support the secure exchange of secrets between devices, quickly and securely set up a new device, and easily regain access.”
Although the keys are stored on the device, passwordless sign-in is cross-platform and “regardless of the state of a user’s hardware and software.” It should also speed up the sign-up process.
Additionally, Dashlane has also provided a passwordless recovery method for Dashlane Account users should they lose their device, called the Dashlane Account Recovery Key, which will also be available for current users who still use a Master Password.
CEO John Bennett outlined Dashlane’s intentions for the future: “The unveiling of today’s passwordless technology marks a significant milestone in our journey to a passwordless future.”
New Dashlane users will be able to set up an account without a password in the coming months, while existing customers can make the switch later this year when their rollout begins.
