Conrad Energy celebrates the full commissioning of our 25MW 50MWh Battery Storage Site (BESS) in Bispham, Blackpool.

After powering up at the end of January, the site has undergone hot commissioning and is now ready to play its part in keeping the lights on in Blackpool. The site can store and release enough energy to power approximately 10,000 homes for 4 hours.

Each site that reaches this point is the culmination of months of preparatory work in partnership with communities, landlords and local authorities. This site is also a team effort of Conrad Energy, Green Frog Connect, the battery division of General Electric (GE) and Electricity North West. This is the first of seven Conrad Energy battery sites being built with GE.

Steven Hardman, Chief Executive Officer of Conrad Energy, said: “Long-term partnerships are a cornerstone of Conrad Energy’s vision of a world powered by a sustainable zero-energy system. This project has strengthened our relationships with key partners aligned with our net zero mission and has enabled us to develop relationships with new local partners in Blackpool.”

Blackpool is also the first battery site that Conrad Energy has taken on from start to finish with our in-house construction team. Battery storage is an essential part of grid stabilization in line with the transition to renewable and low-carbon energy. The development of the technology allows it to fulfill its crucial role in maximizing the benefits of renewable energy by flattening some of the supply curves caused by weather fluctuations.

This fully operational site is now handed over to our operations and maintenance teams to ensure it maintains its optimal performance, with the stored power being traded on the wholesale markets or offered to the system operator to provide a frequency response through our in-house optimization team.

Steve Moody, Trading Director of Conrad Energy, explained: “Conrad Energy’s iON proprietary optimization platform is used for our own and other owner’s sites to ensure the best returns for all of the energy assets we manage. This is the first of seven battery storage sites that continue to increase our impact in both the commercial and frequency response markets. By ensuring that renewable energy is produced and used as efficiently and profitably as possible, we harness the power of our dynamic asset optimization to achieve net zero.”

Conrad Energy offers Route-to-Market Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) that take full advantage of our iON platform and dedicated in-house trading team. To learn more or learn more about hosting a website, please contact us.
