Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite-based broadband internet system, could become much more accessible in the coming years. The Elon Musk-owned company has reportedly been given the green light to launch an additional 7,500 satellites, expanding Starlink’s broadband to over 10,000 low-orbit satellites over the next decade. The new Starlink satellites will help users connect to satellite broadband service directly from their smartphones without any special equipment.

according to a report on CNET, SpaceX expects to offer the service to users using a US carrier T Mobile. The spacecraft maker reportedly filed an application with the US Federal Communications Commission on Dec. 6 for approval to install some of its satellites Starlink Satellites with direct-to-cellular hardware. This allows smartphone users to start using Starlink’s broadband services as soon as they go live.

SpaceX and T-Mobile had already joined forces in August provide Internet access by mobile users in remote parts of the US. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert announced their partnership at SpaceX’s Boca Chica, Texas starbase. The venture would connect cell phones directly to SpaceX’s satellites, thereby eliminating the need for cell towers. It was then reported that the service would begin with text messaging support from the second half of 2023, with voice and data services arriving later.

SpaceX has now been awarded the contract to launch an additional 7,500 satellites over the next 10 years, according to the CNET report. This second generation of Starlink satellites will join the 3,500 first generation satellites already in orbit. In August, SpaceX started Falcon 9 rocket with 46 Starlink satellites in tow into low earth orbit.

SpaceX’s Starlink has also become known for providing satellite broadband in parts of Ukraine amid the ongoing war. However, the country had said last month that it was Looking for other providers for permanent Internet access in the country.
