The annual menstrual hygiene awareness event, Menstrual Hygiene Day, takes place this year on Sunday 28 May. The event was created by the German NGO WASH United to raise awareness of the plight of women affected by period poverty and the importance of menstrual hygiene management.

On the occasion of Menstrual Hygiene Day 2023 and the tenth anniversary of Menstrual Hygiene Day, hope spring will host a reusable pad training workshop at Kabusa Abuja State Secondary School, where we will educate young girls on the importance of menstrual hygiene and provide them with sustainable solutions.

The girls are trained in the fabric and sizing specifications needed to make a reusable pad. They are also taught how to cut, assemble and make their own reusable pads. This will help girls keep going to school and have a better future. This project will also help alleviate period poverty.

Bolu Olorunfemi, Period Poverty Director at Hope Spring Nigeria said: “We are pleased with the hands-on workshop we are hosting on May 31, 2023. The event will potentially benefit more than forty young adults.” The charity’s menstrual hygiene work has recently received a significant boost from two sources. Funding includes proceeds from the popular Video eCard happy birthday from Africa and a fundraiser sponsored by a supporter of the NGO.

Spring Menstrual Hygiene Day training on reusable pads is making significant strides in improving menstrual health education for young women across Nigeria, helping them take responsibility for their reproductive health needs while protecting the environment for future generations.
