WIMBLEDON – Courts are finally dry at Wimbledon and the sun is even peeking through the clouds at times, giving organizers hope of hosting a full day of tennis on Thursday for the first time at this year’s tournament.
The first three days of action at the All England Club were marred by rain. Only eight games were played on Tuesday. These games were played on either Center Court or No. 1 Court, the only stadiums on the site with roofs.
Due to the many disruptions, some first-round matches took place on the fourth day. Normally, the second round ended on the first Thursday of the tournament.
Among the winners was Stan Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam winner from Switzerland. Wawrinka defeated No. 29 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the third round.
Wawrinka, 38, won his most important titles at the other three Grand Slam tournaments, his best result at Wimbledon being reaching the quarter-finals in 2014 and 2015.
In the women’s draw, Sofia Kenin and Elina Svitolina both reached the third round. Kenin eliminated seventh-seeded Coco Gauff in the first round, while Svitolina defeated five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams.
Later on Thursday, two-time champion Andy Murray was scheduled to play fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round on center court, while fourth seed Jessica Pegula was scheduled to take on Cristina Bucsa in the No. 1 seed.
Mirra Andreeva, a 16-year-old qualifier from Russia who is 102nd, reached the third round in her Wimbledon debut. She advanced when No. 10 seed Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic retired with a lower leg injury and Andreeva led 6-3, 4-0.
Krejcikova won the French Open in 2021. Her best performance at the All England Club was reaching the fourth round in the same year.
