1899, Netflix’s baffling mystery thriller, was canceled after one season. In a statement on Instagram, the show’s co-creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Freise confirmed the ambitious multilingual series is no longer expanding its arc, disappointing fans who had been waiting and theorizing the show’s many unsolved mysteries. While the couple never explicitly revealed a reason for the cancellation, the statement seems to indicate that Netflix wasn’t on board with their ideas for seasons 2 and 3 and ultimately pulled the plug on the project itself.
‘It is with a heavy heart that we must tell you that’1899‘ will not be extended,” the statement said. “We would have loved to have completed this incredible journey with a second and third season, as we did with ‘Dark.’ But sometimes things don’t go the way you planned. That’s life.” The creators, who rose to fame with the German sci-fi series Dark, ended by thanking fans for their support. Considering the show’s overwhelming popularity, it’s strange to see Netflix come to this decision. In its first week of release — debuting November 17, 2022 — the show was trouble-free cracked the streamer’s top 10 chartswhich accumulates and sits behind 79.27 million hours of watch time The crown season 5. The week after, 1899 obsolete The second-place British monarchy drama sits comfortably behind record-breaking Jenna Ortega lead Wednesday.
As a follow-up — unaffiliated — too Odar and free Dark, 1899 focuses on a group of European emigrants traveling to a new continent hoping to start a new life, which takes a terrifying turn when they encounter another migrant ship, the Prometheus, and confront the passengers with a mysterious series of events . Speak with The Hollywood ReporterLast year, the creators announced that they already had plans for the series’ direction in the now-cancelled two seasons. “We always like to have an end before we begin. We want to know where we’re going. We move through a story and want to know how it will be solved in the end,” said Freise in an interview. “In the middle there might be some ideas thrown in more loosely. And as we go through the process, the ideas can shift and move to a different position.”
The eight-episode series featured an ensemble cast speaking in 12 different languages to represent diverse European cultures. In 1899 the first TV series followed The Mandalorian Using new LED volume technology to create visual sets that essentially relied on giant digital screens for the background instead of a green/blue screen. To create a continuity effect when switching cameras between characters, the crew of the war of stars Show would shoot in one direction on day one, then in the opposite direction on day two. In 1899, however, the crew simply placed the screens on a turntable, allowing them to conveniently rotate the set.
All eight episodes of 1899 are currently streaming on Netflix. The studio did not give a reason for the cancellation.
