    BERKELEY, CA, August 03, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ — Joseph Norman Evans, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. Dr. Evans joined the Berkeley School of Theology in Berkeley, California, as the J. Alfred Smith Sr. Endowed Chair of Theology in the Public Square, professor of homiletics, and inaugural director of the Center for Truth, Racial Healing, and Restorative Justice. Serving an influential role in education and religious services as a former pastor, teacher, and academic administrator, he actively develops antithesis rhetoric to develop prophetic sermons.

Prior to joining the institution in 2023, Dr. Evans was the dean of the Morehouse School of Religion at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta from 2016 to 2022. During his stay, he was instrumental in raising funds to support the school’s mission and significantly increasing student enrollment. He also garnered experience as an adjunct instructor of homiletics at The Divinity School at Howard University and Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. Dr. Evans also served more than 15 years as a senior pastor at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., and recently served as the immediate interim senior pastor at Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA. During an earlier stage of his career, he pastored at First Baptist Church in Huntington, WV.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Evans has been involved in scholarship and academic program development, has raised substantial funds for minority and other deserving students, has served on the board of directors and in other leading roles to support academic giving campaigns, and has been influential in numerous scholarship and other endowments. He has also been afforded the opportunity to speak at various professional engagements, including as a keynote speaker at the Morehouse School of Religion Founder’s Day Banquet and the University of Richmond Wyatt Tee Walker Symposium.

A well-written author, Dr. Evans has contributed four books, including “Lifting the Veil Over Eurocentrism: The Du Boisian Hermeneutic of Double Consciousness” via Africa World Press, “Reconciliation and Reparation: Preaching Economic Justice” via Judson Press, “The Art of Eloquence: The Sacred Rhetoric of Gardner C. Taylor” via Judson Press, and “The Polished King: Living Words of Martin Luther King Jr.” via Judson Press. He has also contributed several essays for the American Baptist Quarterly, local newspapers such as The Washington Times, and other publications, including the National Baptist Voice and Preaching Magazine. Dr. Evans is presently working on his fifth book.

Highly educated, Dr. Evans earned a Bachelor of Arts in history and government from the West Virginia Institute of Technology. He also garnered a Master of Divinity in systematic theology and a Doctor of Philosophy in homiletics from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1999 and 2004, respectively. He is a member of The Academy of Homiletics, Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc., and Sigma Pi Phi.

In recognition of his success, Dr. Evans was inducted into the Morehouse College, Martin Luther King Jr., College of Preachers, and the Morehouse College Colloquium of Scholars.
