Inspired by her mother and other pillars of life, Ms. Matthews was driven to pursue a career in education. After many years in the field as a first and third grade teacher at the Merrillville School, she changed careers but stayed in the education field by becoming a classroom trainer. Over the years, Ms. Matthews also broadened her professional knowledge by becoming a teacher at John Wood Elementary School.
In her current role as an instructional trainer at the Merrillville School Corporation, Ms. Matthews helps her colleagues improve their skills. She is an expert in her field and holds a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University, which she earned in 2010. While her career has been full of highlights, she takes great pride in helping some of her students who needed extra emotional support. Ms. Matthews not only helped them understand and better regulate their emotions, she also enabled them to socialize and communicate with others.
Although hard work and dedication have brought her far in her career, Ms. Matthews attributes her success to her relationships with her colleagues. As she says, “Teamwork makes the dream come true.” She firmly believes that teaching cannot be done alone and needs a team of professionals. Within the next five to ten years, Ms. Matthews hopes to improve as a teaching coach and develop a program through which she can reach out to other educators, as she is currently doing with peers.
