Motorola will bring a satellite messaging service to its upcoming Defy rugged smartphone in the first quarter of 2023. The company has partnered with Bullitt to bring satellite connectivity to its Android devices. Satellite connectivity was introduced by Apple with the iPhone 14 series. The feature on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14Pro model allows users to make an emergency call and send SOS messages even when there is no cellular or Wi-Fi connection. Now, Motorola plans to bring this feature to the Android ecosystem as well, as announced at CES 2023.

Bullitt added that those who do will have the free one Android or iOS application installed on their handset may be able to receive and respond to messages sent by Bullitt Satellite Messenger over IP or a satellite service. On the other hand, without the app, the users receive the messages as SMS but cannot reply to them.

Additionally, those who don’t have a phone with satellite connection support can use the app over Wi-Fi or a cellular connection.

A Bullitt representative was quoted as saying that SOS will be rolled out gradually on Android.
