Fabrica gallery is pleased to announce in collaboration with Spectrum Photographic, Photo Fringe and Jane & Jeremy that a new photo by Duncan Poulton highlighting the pandemic induced desolation that comes with confronting our own mortality, for which has been selected In between gallery. This work will be on view from December 2022 in Fabrica’s large window area, which showcases contemporary photography in the heart of Brighton’s busy shopping streets for all who pass by.
A distinguished panel of judges (Liz Whitehead; Fabrica, Claire Wearn; Photo Fringe, Hazel Watts; Spectrum, Cairo Clarke; curator and writer, Jane & Jeremy; independent publishers and bookstore; and Ibrahim Azab, artist and curator) selected Findler as the overall winner of a recent Call for a work for space. The image will be shown from December 12, 2023 to April 2023.
Compressing archaeological textbook photos and smiling cartoon rain clouds, this digital collage reminds us that contradictions such as fear and apathy coexist, relentlessly coming and going as the days go by.
About the artist:
Duncan Poulton is an artist based between London and Brighton, UK. His practice feeds on an obsessive collection of online content in a vast digital archive, which is recombined into still and moving image collages. Crafted entirely from found materials, his works address a visual culture of abundance and ambivalence, exploring the condensation of stories and meaning generated by the internet. He is a hoarder, a selector and combiner using the internet as his palette and imagination.
Duncan scours site after site for lost, “poor” and random images buried by biased algorithms in a process he describes as “archaeology of the new” – a real-time archiving and recreation of our increasingly virtual world. His recent works have explored digital waste, obsolescence and the death of privacy, while recurring interests lie in ideas of appropriation, possession and excess.
His production processes bring the analogue virtues of improvisation, aggression and urgency into the digital production space. Works emerge from “material” processes that use software to play with precision, complexity, and texture within digital image files: images are crushed and enlarged, erased, and duplicated in repeating cycles. Content sources range from Creative Commons amateur photography, 3D modeling websites, iPhone photos of charity books, diagrams and patents, graffiti and found drawings. Once made, his works physically manifest in various media – on paper, canvas and aluminium, as well as re-versioned to occupy screens, virtual spaces and publications.
2022 his first solo exhibition Factory settings reset took place at SET Lewisham, London and was featured on WeTransfer, WePresent and Elephant Magazine. Recently there have been group shows and screenings at Ars Electronica; MOSTYN, Llandudno; Coventry Biennial; Art Licks Weekend, London; QUAD, Derby; OUTPOST, Norwich; MIT Museum, Massachusetts; Eastside Projects, Birmingham; arebyte, London; CICA Museum, South Korea; and Transmediale, Berlin. He graduated from the University of Brighton in 2015 and attended the curriculuman alternative learning program run by the Wysing Arts Center and arts venues across England.
