Twitter announced on Wednesday that the Twitter Blue subscription for Android would cost $11 (about Rs 900) a month – the same as for iOS subscribers – while offering a cheaper annual plan for web users compared to monthly fees.
The blue tick — previously free for verified accounts held by politicians, celebrities, journalists, and other public figures — is now available to anyone willing to pay.
It was introduced last year to help Twitter increase sales as an owner Elon Musk struggles to retain advertisers.
Google‘s Android users can buy Twitter Blue monthly subscription for $11 (about Rs. 900), the same price as for Apple‘s iOS users, Twitter said on its website.
The higher price for Android Users will likely offset the fees charged by Android Google play storelike Apple’s app store.
Blue’s web-only subscription annual plan cost US$84 (approx. Rs. 6,800), a discount from the monthly web subscription price of US$ 8 (approx. Rs. 650).
Twitter did not respond to a request for comment on its Android pricing strategy.
The discount for web users would be available in countries like the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand and Australia, Twitter said.
The blue tick was previously reserved for verified accounts of politicians, celebrities, journalists, and other public figures. But last year it launched a subscription option open to anyone willing to pay to help Twitter grow revenue while Musk struggles to retain advertisers.
Earlier in December, Musk added that Twitter’s basic blue tick will have half as many ads, and the social media platform will offer a higher tier of no ads by next year.
