Leveraging more than two decades of excellence in military service and education, Mr. Hossfeld has earned distinction as a research development officer for the University of Texas at Austin’s Defense Research Advancement. Since 2022, he has focused his efforts on collaborating with the Office of the Vice President of Research to facilitate faculty research initiatives in partnership with the United States Department of Defense.
Prior to starting his private career, Mr. Hossfeld served honorably as a colonel in the United States Army, beginning as an infantry officer in various locations including Hawaii, Washington, Louisiana, North Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee. He was deployed as a company commander in Iraq and three times in Afghanistan as a brigade operations officer overseeing 900 people, transitioning from the battalion to the brigade level to manage a larger force of soldiers. Following this time, he served as the United States Army’s 82nd Airborne Division chief of current operations in 2009, coordinating with special operations forces in multinational formations. He concluded his military service in 2022 leading the 101st Airborne Division’s 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry and went to Afghanistan as the single infantry battalion stationed in Kandahar. He also taught at the United States Army War College during his service.
Among his military accomplishments, Mr. Hossfeld was honored with two Legions of Merit, four Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He also received an Excellence in Service Award and an Excellence in Innovation Award from the United States Army War College for his stellar work.
While developing his professional journey, Mr. Hossfeld earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Washington State University in 1996. Continuing his education, he attained a Master of Arts in liberal arts with a focus on military history and political science from Louisiana State University in 2008. He subsequently gained a master’s degree in strategic studies from The United States Army War College in 2017.
Looking to the future, Mr. Hossfeld intends to continue working with the University of Texas at Austin’s Defense Research Advancement, engaging in cutting-edge research in areas like autonomous systems and artificial intelligence. He also lends his expertise as a volunteer mentor to ROTC cadets across all military branches with the University of Texas at Austin out of his determination to contribute to the greater good and make a positive impact on society.
