Nvidia finally announced the official launch date of its RTX Video Super Resolution feature, first announced during CES 2023. The tool, which uses artificial intelligence to upscale video to 4K resolution, is slated for a February 2023 release window for Chrome and Edge browsers.
RTX Video Super Resolution, as illustrated PC gamer, allows “Resolutions beyond 1080p. It upscales video with a native resolution between 360p and 1440p and works with video with a frame rate up to 144Hz.” This feature requires either an RTX 3000 series or 4000 series GPU to run. Could this be the future of video upscaling?
While 4K video upscaling for TV isn’t new, it’s a new technology for browsers and streaming video. The fact that artificial intelligence is doing the actual enhancement is both impressive and potentially divisive.
Although this AI technology is showing us truly incredible results, as we can see from the demonstration video, AI in general has become a hotbed due to its perceived abuse and copyright infringement that has resulted from its use in art.
Still, it will be fascinating to see how the RTX Video Super Resolution feature evolves and improves, and what kind of videos work best with this tool. Hopefully this application of AI won’t encounter the same level of controversy in the meantime and we can see its use spread to other media.
