The matchup for Super Bowl LVII is set, and while the Kansas City Chiefs (5th appearance) and Philadelphia Eagles (4th appearance) are no strangers to being in the big game, this is the first time they’ve been in compete against each other in a super bowl.
Here are five storylines between the Chiefs and the Eagles that you should check out.
1. Kelce brothers
For the first time in Super Bowl history, the matchup will have two brothers on opposing teams, 35-year-old Philadelphia center Jason Kelce and 33-year-old Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce.
To make matters worse, both players are considered by many to be the best of all time at their respective positions. Not only will they play in the same Super Bowl, but someday they’ll likely both be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
2. Andy Reid meets an old team
Speaking of Hall of Famers, Kansas City head coach Andy Reid is likely to be inducted for a distinguished career as head coach not only of the Chiefs, but of the Eagles as well. Reid helped build the Eagles into a powerhouse in the early 2000s, culminating when the Eagles played New England in Jacksonville in Super Bowl XXXIX.
3. Bag Master
Good teams usually come after the opposing quarterback, and the Chiefs and Eagles have done better than anyone else in the NFL during the regular season. Philadelphia finished #1 in the NFL with 70 sacks in the postseason, while Kansas City finished second with 55 sacks.
4. Seed #1 collide
It’s not that often that the two No. 1 seeded AFC and NFC meet in the Super Bowl, but that will be the case this year. The last time that happened was five years ago when Philadelphia defeated New England in Super Bowl LII.
5. Current champions
Every team has won a Super Bowl in the last five years, so there will not be an element in this year’s matchup where one or both teams are trying to win their first Super Bowl or endure a long drought to win the big game . Philadelphia beat New England in Super Bowl LII while Kansas City beat San Francisco in Super Bowl LIV three years ago.
