After suffering an ankle injury in a terrifying crash at the Austrian Grand Prix over the weekend, Joan Mir will miss the upcoming MotoGP race in San Marino, his team Suzuki announced on Tuesday.
The former MotoGP champion crashed after losing control of his motorcycle on the first lap at the Red Bull Ring circuit. He landed hard on the gravel and suffered a small fracture to his right ankle as a result.
After additional testing on Monday, the Spaniard was told to take a 15-day break from work. The weekends of September 3 and 4 are when the San Marino Grand Prix is held.
Mir said in a statement, “Unfortunately, I will miss the Misano race, but I am confident I can return in Aragon (two weeks later).”
It’s been a challenging season, but I’m confident we’ll bounce back stronger to give my team and all of you who support me more happy memories.
Mir, who claimed the title in 2020, has had a challenging campaign and is currently ranked 12th in the standings with no podium finishes and six retirements.
Suzuki is expected to leave MotoGP at the end of the current campaign due to financial difficulties, so his future is also uncertain, but he has been linked with a move to Honda.
In 2023, his teammate Alex Rins, who is currently eighth in the standings, will join Honda satellite team LCR Honda.
