Dr. Crowley is an expert in history and politics who began his career in higher education over a decade ago. In 2019, he joined the University of Utah in Salt Lake City as an associate professor of business in the department of management at the David Eccles Business School. Teaching two courses, Dr. Crowley is an expert on the history of World War II in Britain and the experiences of women workers in Britain. Besides lecturing, he conducts research in his field and serves on several university committees and professional associations.
Drawing a deep sense of satisfaction in hearing that his former students have gone on to make a difference in society through their work, Dr. Crowley is grateful to have served an instrumental role in their development. Looking toward the future, he has set his sights on garnering an administrative role within the university system. The University of Utah is presently focused on expanding its international programs, and Dr. Crowley aspires to use his experience in creating similar programs in China and Asia more broadly to help with this initiative.
Dr. Crowley taught in the UK while undertaking his Ph.D., tutoring at Cardiff University in the Department of Politics for his mentor and major academic inspiration, Professor Peter Dorey. After completing his Ph.D., he worked as a foreign expert at Hubei University of Education in Wuhan, China, from 2010 to 2011. He was soon hired as a postdoctoral researcher at Wuhan University in 2011, and was then promoted to lecturer in 2012. Dr. Crowley was subsequently named as a research professor from 2013 to 2019, where he held the rank of Associate Professor and early career Chu Tian research professor. At Wuhan University, Dr. Crowley taught three undergraduate courses, one postgraduate course, and supervised numerous graduate students at both the masters and Ph.D. level. He was also responsible for leading research teams on international projects, and was tasked with developing the university’s English language research and teaching provision. After seven years at Wuhan, Dr. Crowley took sabbatical leave in the USA, where he served as a visiting research scholar at Harvard University’s Center for European Studies in Massachusetts in the academic year 2018-2019.
As a scholar, Dr. Crowley has published three books and over a dozen scholarly articles. More recently, he was a contributing author and editor of the 2021 book, “Women’s Experiences of the Second World War: Exile, Occupation, and Everyday Life” edited by Sandra Dawson and Nupur Chaudhuri.
Having been active civically, Dr. Crowley served as the President of the Economic and Business History Society from 2020-2022, and hosted an international conference for the society in Salt Lake City in May 2022. For 2023-2025 he will serve as the Treasurer of the Pacific Coast Conference on British Studies. Dr. Crowley also serves as a reviewer of manuscripts for numerous scholarly journals and academic publishers.
In preparation for his career, Dr. Crowley received an undergraduate degree in modern history and politics, and graduated with honors from Cardiff University in 2004. He then obtained a master’s degree in modern history from Oxford University in 2005, and a Doctor of Philosophy in modern British history from the University of London in 2009, where he was supervised by Professor Pat Thane, and was the recipient of a scholarship from the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The Collaborative Doctoral Award provided by the Arts and Humanities Research Council funded Dr. Crowley’s research at the British Postal Museum and Archive for 3 years, which culminated in his Ph.D. that examined women’s Post Office employment in Britain during the Second World War. During this time, he also received certification to teach English as a Foreign Language through ITC.
Active in his professional community, Dr. Crowley is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Society for the History of Technology, the American Historical Association, the Business History Conference, the Economic and Business History Society, and the North American Conference on British Studies.
Dr. Crowley’s success has earned him recognition in his field, and he was the recipient of the Marvin Ashton Teaching Award from the David Eccles Business School at the University of Utah in 2022. This was awarded in recognition of excellence in undergraduate instruction in the David Eccles Business School.
