Dr. Banka enjoyed a long and successful career as a cardiologist, specializing in general and interventional cardiology, before retiring from his practice in 2014. Since then, he has established himself as the president of Banka & Banka Medical Specialties in Penn Valley, Pennsylvania. Leveraging over four decades of success, Dr. Banka held numerous roles during his renowned career in clinical practice, research, and education.
Having begun his cardiology career in his native India in 1967, Dr. Banka was a registrar in cardiology at the Hospital of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research. In 1972, he began working in Philadelphia, where he would spend the remainder of his profession. Hired as the director of the cardiovascular research laboratory at the Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, he subsequently became the director of the director of the cardiac catheterization laboratories between 1974 and 1983. Dr. Banka simultaneously began teaching as a clinical instructor in medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in the school of medicine in 1973, rising to assistant professor and associate professor. Additionally, he earned appointments teaching at Temple University, the Medical College of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson University, and Drexel University. Dr. Banka spent over a decade at the Episcopal Hospital, beginning as the director of interventional cardiovascular medicine from 1983 to 1996 and as the chief of the division of cardiology between 1984 and 1996, and as the medical director for the Episcopal Heart Institute from 1987 to 1996. From 1996 to 2012, he served as Director of cardiac catheterization and interventional cardiology at the historic Pennsylvania Hospital with the academic position of clinical Professor of Medicine at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He retired as an attending interventional cardiologist at Hahnemann University Hospital, having served in his position from 2010 to 2013.

However, Dr. Banka’s most notable achievement was his contribution to establishing the Episcopal Heart Institute at Episcopal Hospital in Philadelphia. As a seasoned scholar, he has contributed over 100 peer-reviewed articles to various journals and attended numerous research papers at national cardiology meetings.
In preparation for his medical career, Dr. Banka earned an undergraduate degree in 1958 and a Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery in 1964 from Punjab University. He also completed a residency in internal medicine in his native India, followed by a second residency in cardiovascular diseases from Howard University and a fellowship in cardiology from the Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia. Dr. Banka is board-certified in internal medicine and interventional cardiology and holds a subspecialty certification in cardiovascular diseases.
Dr. Banka has been active in his professional community as a member of several organizations, including the Philadelphia County Medical Society, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the Pennsylvania Medical Society. He was also a founding member of the Philadelphia Academy of Cardiology and a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology, the American Society of Cardiovascular Interventionists, and the American Heart Association.
In light of his achievements, Dr. Banka was recognized by the Philadelphia County Medical Society in 2020 with an Award for 50 Years of Service. He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Cardiologists of Indian Origin, the Filipino-American Association of Philadelphia, and the Association of Physicians of South Jersey. Moreover, Dr. Banka received a Teaching Awards for teaching residents and fellows.
