Money Heist Berlin just got a release window. In an announcement teaser featuring returning actor Pedro Alonso, Netflix announced that the spin-off series will land this December. Set before the events of the popular Mainline cult show, Berlin serves as an origin story of sorts, following legendary jewel thief Andrés de Fonollosa/Berlin as he constructs a series of heists across Europe with an all-new crew. Money Heist franchise creator Álex Pina returns to co-write the eight-episode project with David Oliva and David Barrocal. Both previously worked on Netflix’s Sky Rojo series.
The Berlin Teaser builds on the above construction premise, with Berlin (Alonso) plotting a jewel robbery at an auction house. He can be seen playing around with a model of the area – placing paper models of the getaway car, decoys and the security personnel who will be guarding the huge safe. He is then seen examining the precious treasure before being distracted by a mysterious woman’s cleavage in his model. The unnamed character is implied to be Berlin’s love interest in the story. “It’s going to be a journey through the character’s golden years. As he stole across Europe, madly in love”, Creator Pina said while Netflix Tudum event last year (via colliders).
Formerly the studio revealed Berlin’s new band of characters who aided him in his endeavor long before he became involved with the mainline’s masked raiding party money robbery Series. The new faces include Tristan Ulloa (Terminator: Dark Fate) as the philanthropic professor Damián, Michelle Jenner as tech genius Keila, Begona Vargas as mad cameron, Julio Pena Fernandez as the determined Roi, and Joel Sanchez who plays Bruce, a relentless man of action. filming on Berlin began in Paris on October 3, with production expanding to Madrid in the later weeks.
Berlin sacrificed itself for the uninitiated Money Heist Season 2, leaving fans with many unanswered questions regarding his character. Hopefully this upcoming spin-off series will shed some light on his afflictions with Helmer’s myopathy, the muscle-debilitating disease that had shortened his lifespan. While all of this seems harsh, consider that the character of Berlin was a racist and a misogynist – a trait even of the actor Alonso and Creator Pina accepted in the Netflix documentary Money Heist: The Phenomenon.
in a (n interview With Oprah Daily, Pina touched on the idea of exploring more spinoffs set in the Money Heist universe when the mainline show ended season 5 in 2021. “We have a lot of possibilities for some spin-offs, yes, and I think that’s because of the characters’ strong and powerful identities,” he said. “We’ve always looked for characters that have a very complex, layered design. So I think almost every character in Money Heist has a duality that we would like to see in a spinoff. We could see each of them in different contexts.”
Berlinthe spin-off series Money Heist is due out on Netflix in December.
