Each intricate illustration gives young readers and listeners plenty to ponder, including hidden animals sleeping in bushes, intricate details of clothing and buildings, and locations reminiscent of notable locations in Greater Manchester. The use of jewel-like colors, structures with pipes and metal supports, gables with ornate scrollwork, turrets and domes evoke a design aesthetic inspired by the 19th century industrial era. Given the casual grace and fleeting presence of the story’s character, readers wonder if it was all just a pipe dream.
