The Meta Platforms oversight board announced Tuesday that it will be reviewing more types of content moderation cases and expediting some decisions as it looks to expand its work.
The supervisory board was created for review at the end of 2020 Facebook And Instagram‘s decisions about whether to remove or leave certain content and whether to maintain or discontinue the content social media the actions of the company. Since then, the panel has published 35 case decisions, it said in a blog post.
The board, which has 22 members, said it will now start expediting the publication of decisions in some cases. Decisions can be made within 48 hours of accepting a case, while others can take up to 30 days.
Standard decisions where the Oversight Board reviews MetaContent moderation actions by in detail can take up to 90 days.
Releasing more decisions and picking up the pace will “lead us to address more of the big content moderation challenges and respond more quickly in situations with urgent real-world consequences,” the board said in the blog post.
Unlike standard decisions, expedited cases are reviewed by a panel of board members rather than the full board, and public comments are disregarded.
The board will also begin posting summary decisions to analyze instances where Meta has changed its mind on whether to vacate or downsize positions. Such cases could help Meta avoid similar mistakes in the future and could be useful for researchers and civil society, the board said.
Kenji Yoshino, a professor of constitutional law at New York University School of Law, will be inducted as a new board member on Tuesday.
