Mr. Burchfield is an established professional specializing in clean energy as the Chief Executive Officer of Burch Energy Services Inc. in Portland, Oregon. Committed to repairing and healing the environment for future generations, he and his team are committed to not only creating opportunity in the clean energy future for marginalized people, including black, indigenous, and people of color but also providing design-build and energy engineering services and delivering energy efficiency programs to accommodate diverse needs. In addition to these services, Mr. Burchfield’s firm offers a peer mentorship program that facilitates business-to-business coaching to help grow contractor expertise. Moreover, Burch Energy offers an emerging energy efficiency economy (E^4) course to encourage future participation in the clean energy industry.

Since its founding in 2020, Burch Energy has been highly profitable without the need for any external funding. In 2023, Mr. Burchfield scaled it to $3 million in revenue. Catering to priority populations where services are not readily available, he is eager to expand the business, particularly along the East Coast in New York and New Jersey, where there is high demand for energy efficiency. Mr. Burchfield also recently launched a new software entity, BuildingLens, in 2022 as the company’s chief executive officer. BuildingLens is the result of his efforts to develop unique software for the consulting and construction industry.

Leading the industry since 2011, Mr. Burchfield previously worked for several leading companies in various roles, including as an energy engineer at Nexant, as the director of engineering at JouleSmart, and as a lead project engineer at NorthWrite, where he worked his way up to become the director of engineering.

Besides his fieldwork, Mr. Burchfield has been serving on the board of the NW Energy Coalition in Seattle since 2022, which promotes clean and affordable energy throughout the Northwest. He has also been active civically, speaking to young entrepreneurs and minorities interested in becoming business owners through the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). Moreover, Mr. Burchfield is an active member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Outside his fieldwork, Mr. Burchfield taught as an adjunct engineering professor at Mount Hood Community College from 2017 to 2021 and at the Oregon Institute of Technology between 2018 and 2019.

Mr. Burchfield is highly educated, having received a Bachelor of Science in renewable energy engineering from the Oregon Institute of Technology in 2013 and a Master of Science in engineering and technology management from Portland State University in 2017. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include designations as a Certified Energy Manager through the Association of Energy Engineers in 2016, engineer-in-training through the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying in 2019, and professional engineer designation through the Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying in 2020.

Mr. Burchfield is a member of several leading industry-related organizations, including the National Association of Minority Contractors of Oregon, the Northwest Energy Coalition, and the NSBE. In recognition of his accomplishments, he was featured as a changemaker in Energy Trust of Oregon in 2023, highlighting his efforts to normalize inclusivity in the clean energy economy. The Oregon Entrepreneurial Network recognized him among the top three finalists for a Growth Stage Award in 2023. Furthermore, Mr. Burchfield’s company was recognized as Oregon’s 15th largest black, indigenous people of color business.
