India is exploring the use cases of blockchain technology to maximize its potential. The Maharashtra government has partnered with the Algorand blockchain and MAPay, a health technology company, to store health data as NFTs. The Department of Public Health and Family Welfare under the Government of Maharashtra will release 100 million NFTs in the first phase of this initiative. The development comes after Algorand claimed to have seen tons of blockchain supporters from India at its Decipher conference recently held in Dubai.
released in 2019, Algorand is a green Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchain. Blockchain developers claim to enable convergence between them Decentralized Finance (DeFi) and traditional finance.
“NFTs will help eliminate intermediaries in the healthcare system who routinely create bottlenecks, introduce risk and drive up costs for all parties, including patients, healthcare providers, insurance companies and banks.” official statement said about the initiative.
The Algorand blockchain vouches for being carbon negative with no zero time since its inception.
The Algorand Foundation has appointed Anil Kakani as Country Manager to oversee all of their activities in India.
Storing patient data on the blockchain would not only be unchangeable, but also bring more transparency to the overall system.
MAPay, meanwhile, is already working with healthcare providers in the US to move related data over the internet Blockchain.
“This use case is a perfect real-world application of blockchain technology. The impact on individuals and society as a whole is what we wake up to every day,” commented Michael Dershem, CEO of MAPay, on the partnership.
United Nations members have also welcomed India’s move to open up experiments in blockchain technology.
“This technology is transformative. Its worldwide transmission and acceptance once seemed unimaginable; but now it is within reach,” noted Sabine Kapasi, head of the UN Health Policy and Governance Strategy.
This isn’t the first time the Maharashtra government has delved deeper into testing distributed Leger technology.
In March of this year, the Polygon blockchain was selected for issue by the Maharashtrian government caste certificates in the village of Etapalli and in the district of Gadchiroli.
The move aimed to curb the “threat of counterfeiting” and “identify the right beneficiaries for government program delivery.”
The technology is also attracting the attention of other government agencies in India.
That Firozabad Police Department, announced back in October the launch of a new complaints forum built on top of the Polygon blockchain. All details stored in the blockchain network cannot be changed or edited. This would ensure the consistency of detail in the cases that would be investigated.
