Apple is reportedly getting closer to incorporating microLED displays into its future wearables. The next Apple Watch Ultra, which is speculated to officially launch in 2024, is expected to use the improved display tech. The Cupertino-based tech giant’s entire lineup is now expected to eventually transition to microLED displays, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman suggested in a newsletter emailed to subscribers. Apple could take a full decade to install the superior display on its iPhone, iPad, and Mac lineup. This would allow the company to reduce its reliance on other display suppliers like Samsung Electronics and LG.
No later than edition of his Power On newsletter, Gurman confirmed his earlier claims and said so apples Switching to its custom microLED displays will cover its entire product line after the technology debuts in the Apple Watch Ultra in 2024. Starting next year, Apple could replace the current OLED standard with microLED technology iPhone, iPadand Mac units.
According to Gurman, Apple’s MicroLED project, codenamed T159, started in 2017. The MicroLED display offers high resolution, color contrast, viewing angles, and brightness. With this move, the Cupertino, California-based tech giant wants to reduce its dependence on companies like Samsung electronics and LG.
Gurman predicts that Apple’s microLED displays will debut with the Apple Watch Ultra in late 2024. Then the display technology could reach the iPhone series, followed by the iPad series and finally the Mac models. The company will likely take its time making the transition, and it may be a full decade before microLED arrives on Macs.
Besides Apple, Samsung is too planning to use microLED displays for its future Galaxy series wearables. The South Korean electronics manufacturer is currently using OLED displays for its Galaxy smartwatches. Samsung’s display division reportedly started a MicroLED display development project last year and hired a team to commercialize MicroLED displays for smartwatches.
