Apple could be working on backlit dynamic keyboard technology that would allow keys to perform multiple functions instead of being tied to one. A new patent filed by the Cupertino, California-based tech giant hints at a future MacBook that could feature a keyboard with alternating key functions that light up depending on context. The underlying LEDs could reportedly even display animations and videos above the keys. Existing backlight technology in keyboards is only intended to illuminate the intended key function.
according to a report in Patently Apple, the US Patent & Trademark Office published a Apple Patent on Thursday dealing specifically with the keyboard mechanism. The patent mentions that the keys would be partially aluminum and would feature dynamic labels, or “glyphs,” that would light up according to their function.
“In particular, the present embodiments relate to keycaps with illuminable glyphs that are selectively visible or invisible to the unaided human eye,” the report states. The patent mentions that future Apple keyboards could have perforations on keycaps that would allow a series of LED lights to illuminate alternating symbols, numbers, and letters by selectively illuminating specific perforations.
Such a dynamic keyboard could also allow users to completely change keyboard layouts or even switch to a different language. Additionally, the report states that the key LEDs could be controlled to show animation, information, or even video on a specific key or group of keys.
Apple noted in its patent filing that its keyboard would offer several advantages over existing backlit keyboards. Current keys are mostly made of plastic and are usually painted or coated with letters or symbols. Repeated use of the keyboard will cause the fur to fade over time. An aluminum key would represent a much higher quality, while changing LED glyphs would eliminate the problem of key icon rubbing.
Apple had continued to use its much-maligned butterfly keyboard MacBooks from 2015 to 2019. Earlier this year, the company paid US$50 million (approximately Rs.4.14 billion) to settle class-action lawsuit alleging defective MacBook keyboards. The company now offers the Magic Keyboard for its MacBooks.
