Google Collaborates with Garmin and Skylo to Enhance Pixel 9 Series with Emergency SOS Feature

Satellite SOS technology is increasingly becoming a standard feature in new smartphones, potentially making dedicated devices like Garmin’s inReach messengers less relevant. However, Garmin’s role is not being diminished but rather adapted to new developments. Google has partnered with Garmin and Skylo to integrate satellite SOS functionality into the Pixel 9 series, combining their capabilities to enhance emergency response services.

Currently, this satellite SOS feature is exclusive to users in the US and is only available on the Pixel 9 series, which includes the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Older Pixel models do not support this feature.

Garmin Response, a service that handles over 17,000 SOS activations annually across more than 150 countries, will be a crucial part of this new functionality. However, as of now, Google’s satellite SOS support is limited to the US. This mirrors Apple’s initial approach, suggesting that Google may expand the service to other regions once initial implementation issues are resolved. Garmin’s extensive network, which includes search and rescue professionals, coast guards, embassies, and other critical organizations, will continue to provide vital emergency coordination services.

Brad Trenkle, Garmin’s Co-Chief Operating Officer, commented on the partnership, stating, “Garmin welcomes the opportunity to expand our proven, premium satellite emergency response coordination services to the Android ecosystem, starting with Google Pixel 9 in the U.S. Each year, Garmin Response supports thousands of SOS activations, likely saving lives in the process. We are looking forward to collaborating with Google to help people connect to emergency services when they need them.”

In addition to Garmin, Google has partnered with Skylo, a Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) service provider. Skylo collaborates with various satellite operators and carriers globally to offer emergency connectivity in areas without cell or Wi-Fi access. Skylo’s global network operates 24/7, which supports the potential for broadening the Pixel 9’s satellite SOS capabilities in the future.

Skylo has worked closely with Google’s Pixel and Android teams to develop the “direct-to-device” satellite connectivity feature. Android 15 will include native support for satellite messaging, paving the way for other smartphone manufacturers to incorporate similar technology.

Parth Trivedi, Co-Founder and CEO of Skylo, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “Skylo is honored to be the satellite service partner for Google Pixel. Our service has been meticulously developed with both the Pixel and Android teams at Google as well as all our supporting ecosystem partners.”
