Indian-made phone shipments down 8 percent in Q3 2022: report

Shipments of Made in India smartphones reportedly decreased 8 percent to 52 million units in the third quarter of 2022 compared to the third quarter of 2021. According to a survey by market research firm Counterpoint Research, reduced consumer demands and market uncertainties have impacted deliveries. While Oppo led smartphone shipments Made in India with a 24 percent market share in the third quarter, Samsung and Vivo are second and third respectively.

It said 63 percent of Made in India shipments came from in-house manufacturers, while the remaining 37 percent came from third-party EMS providers. Chinese smartphone manufacturer oppo has the highest market share of 24 percent in smartphone shipments Made in India in the third quarter, followed by Samsung and live. However, BYD and Lava are said to be the fastest growing manufacturers in terms of smartphone shipments.

The report also suggested that local smartphone manufacturing could see an uptick with more partnerships such as Tata Group and Wistron, as well as Foxconn and Vedanta. In addition, the Indian government is aiming to expand local value added from the current 17-18 percent to 25 percent in the near future, the report added. Therefore, production volumes could increase with a focus on exporting OEMs to other countries.

Earlier this month, a study by Trendforce found a decline in global smartphone production in Q3 2022. It said the industry produced 289 million units from July to September, down 0.9 percent quarter-on-quarter from 307 million units in Q2. On an annual basis, the decline is around 11 percent.
