Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra were unveiled during the company’s Galaxy Unpacked event on Wednesday. The new flagship series comes with a custom-built Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform for Galaxy, replacing Samsung’s in-house Exynos chipsets. This exclusive version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC features overclocked CPU and GPU cores. The 4nm SoC Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 was launched late last year. Its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, featured in the Samsung Galaxy S22 range, while devices in some regions featured Samsung’s Exynos 2200 SoC under the hood.
Qualcomm’s latest SoC based on the Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+And Galaxy S23 Ultra is known as “Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy”. The souped-up version of the chip comes with optimizations for AI, gaming and graphics features specific to the new Samsung phones.
In a prepared statement, Qualcomm claims that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy is the fastest Snapdragon currently available. “Our strong strategic partnership with Samsung is the result of our shared commitment to innovation and delivering the world’s best smartphone experiences to consumers,” he said Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon.
This custom version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC features a clock speed of up to 3.36 GHz. The regular version features a premium CPU core with a maximum clock speed of 3.2 GHz. It also packs an upgraded Qualcomm Adreno GPU for hardware-accelerated, real-time ray-tracing effects during gaming sessions. According to the company, the chip has camera features such as video recording in extremely low light, noise reduction in multiple images and 200-megapixel photo capture.
The Galaxy S23 smartphones have two AI processors that can take advantage of the Qualcomm Sensing Hub, which means they can support echo cancellation and noise cancellation on calls. It also offers Wi-Fi 7 connectivity with the Snapdragon FastConnect 6900 and 7800 systems. The latest mobile platform includes a Snapdragon X70 5G modem with support for 5G/4G Dual SIM Dual-Active support, allowing the simultaneous use of two 5G SIMs enabled.
In addition, the Galaxy S23 models are equipped with an in-display Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2, which is based on acoustic technology and identifies a user’s individual fingerprint including unique features for biometric authentication.
Samsung and Qualcomm reached an agreement in July last year agreement to adopt Snapdragon chipsets for future Samsung Galaxy premium devices. The US-based chipset maker has provided Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC for the legacy devices Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+ And Galaxy S22 Ultra models in selected markets.
