The pilot The Last of Us – available now on Disney+ Hotstar – was a great demonstration of how the curse of the video game adaptation was broken by relying on the spelling of the source material. The inclusion of Neil Druckmann – the author of the original 2013 PlayStation game – coupled with Craig Mazins (Chernobyl) film literacy on the HBO show, reassured core fans that this could be something special, and it actually delivered wonderful results. While much of the pilot felt like a shot-by-shot remake, it was the nuances in filmmaking that made it even more special. Scrambled eggs naturally looked pale yellow instead of orange. You could see the characters actually eating their food instead of fiddling with it. Especially since it’s an HBO series, most of the footage was hand-held, which only serves to delve into the emotionally shaking psyches of the desperate survivors.

Though it has a similarly dystopian, post-apocalyptic setting as most zombie-killing media, The last of us turned to the human aspect. Here the focus is on the unlikely duo of hardened survivors Joel (Pedro Pascal) and a young girl Ellie (Bella Ramsey), who adopt a father-daughter relationship over the course of the video game. This sentimentality effect is amplified by minor changes The last of us the show’s lyrics, which help us understand Joel’s heartbreak. The pilot film was excellently done and only makes us look forward to the coming weeks!

That is, this HBO The series wasn’t the only traditional medium to nail a video game adaptation. So while we wait until each coming Monday for a new episode, here is a list of some great video game themed movies and TV shows that you can watch or re-watch to keep you busy.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Aside from the Blade Runner-style world-building – plagued by machines, sex and body mods – Cyberpunk: Edgerunners runs almost independently of the actual video game, simply using the universe as a vehicle to capture the misfit story of a street kid, David. Since Studio Trigger served as animator on this film, we’re presented with an over-the-top, dynamic art style that plays with body physics and capitalizes on its neon-lit color palette.

It’s definitely adult-oriented for an anime of this caliber, with plenty of gore, bullets and violence, in addition to a cast of eccentric characters that will grow on you over time and make you wonder which side you’ll choose should . There was also the once tarnished Cyberpunk 2077 A new life.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Although the first CGI designs by sound were incredibly inaccurate, the final film turned out to be an entertaining live-action adaptation of one of the most popular video game characters of all time. The film benefited from excellent performances by James Marsden and Jim Carey as antagonist Dr. Robotnik as well as some nice throwbacks to the original Sonic games from the 1990s. It might be silly at times, but fans of Sonic will still be happy.

arcane

When it comes to building comprehensive backstories, no one comes close riot games, which now functions as both a game developer and a production company.
