The TV series The Last of Us has been renewed for a second season. In a tweet, HBO confirmed the next chapter in its live-action adaptation of the acclaimed PlayStation video game, just two episodes into Season 1. The original game writer and now co-president of Naughty Dog responded to the tweet, claiming that the new Season will chronicle the events of the polarizing, gory sequel The Last of Us Part II. Show co-writer Craig Mazin previously suggested that the sequel was likely to be adapted if enough people saw it, convincing the studio to plan a new season.
During Disney+ Hotstar — India’s must-see travel destination The last of us Series – did not provide viewership details, HBO did it episode after episode. Adored by fans and critics alike, the second episode garnered 5.7 million viewers on HBO and HBO Max in the US, up 22 percent from the 4.7 million viewers attracted to the pilot. According to HBO, the numbers mark “the largest second-week viewership growth for an HBO Original drama series in the history of the network.” Obviously, the studio loves the attention and has now greenlit a second season to continue Joel and Ellie’s arc. While there are no cast details yet, it’s likely that the current leads will reprise their roles in season 2.
“I’m so thankful for that Neil Druckman and HBO for our partnership, and I’m even more grateful to the millions of people who have joined us on this journey.” Mazinexecutive producer and showrunner, The last of us, said in a prepared statement. “The audience gave us a chance to keep going, and as a fan of the characters and the world, Neil and cheeky dog created, I couldn’t be more ready to dive back in.” The Last of Us, much like that Original video game from 2013follows the emotional journey of a hardened survivor and smuggler, Joel (Pedro Pascal), when he met a young girl, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) through the post-apocalyptic USA teeming with infected mutants, desperate survivors and some cheeky jerks. The series also has stars Nick Offerman as fat-haired ally Bill and Merle Dandridge as Marlene, the leader of the rebel group Fireflies. The latter also voiced the same character in the original game.
The Last of Us Season 2 will likely follow the story of The last of Part II in a similar effect. It takes place five years after the events of the first part PS4 The game followed two playable characters in a similar post-apocalyptic setting, whose lives intertwine to create some of the best revenge stories ever told in a video game. Despite being bombarded with reviews on multiple sites due to some narrative choices – avoiding details for spoilers – it became the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive, selling over four million copies on its release weekend. The title was also enormously honored The game prices 2020, including winning the prestigious Game of the Year trophy.
There is also a possibility that the second season will be a two-parter. Speak with IGN Last week, Mazin explained that the story in The Last of Us Part 2 is “more than a television season.” “It’s a big animal to cut up, you know?” he said. “Because it’s a much bigger and more complicated story, I think it’s a beautiful story.”
