The ARMYs (BTS’ fandom) have been devastated ever since it was revealed that the group’s eldest member Kim Seokjin will be signing up for South Korea’s mandatory military service. But they have given the South Korean idol a tonne of support. Jin now said that he had been preparing to do this for a while. The Bangtan Boys member recently collaborated with Coldplay on his solo song, The Astronaut. He also joined the group for their performance of his solo song in Argentina.
Jin discussed his military plans before to his performance and disclosed that he had made up his mind to join the military after BTS released their studio album BE in 2020. After finishing his performance in Argentina, he declared, “I guess I will fill out my paperwork for mandatory service as soon as I land in Korea,” referring to the military as a “Voldemort subject” for them.
“Originally, the band and I had talked about intentions for me to enlist soon after the ‘BE’ album,” he continued. However, our song “Dynamite” topped Billboard’s “Hot 100” that summer, coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic wave. Its surprising success prevented me from immediately joining the military at that time. To show our fans some love in exchange for their support while we were still in the midst of a pandemic, we chose to concentrate on the songs “Butter” and “Permission to Dance.” It just didn’t feel right for me to put everything down and abandon the members and fans after these two songs also achieved enormous success.
He added that the following Permission to Dance, it was decided that he would have to take part in their concerts before beginning his military duty. Jin had previously admitted to his group that he would most certainly miss acting on stage if he joined the military. “So after successfully wrapping up our shows, we received an invitation to the Grammy Awards. The decision was made to pursue the Grammys at that point.
Jin then disclosed that his employer had given him the “OK” for him to enlist sometime in May or June of this year. His preparations, however, were derailed by BTS’ Busan show, which the members believed might be their final opportunity to perform a concert together in Korea. “We haven’t performed in a setting where we could hear the voices of our Korean fans.” So they persuaded me to hold off till the Busan performance was over.
After a few days after their concert in Busan, Jin revealed his military strategy. The BTS members RM, Jimin, Suga, J-Hope, Jungkook, and V would join the military after Jin.
“In Korea, the group as a whole and I experienced a lot of hatred as a result of the incident. To be quite honest, I have a small amount of anger inside of me. We kept our stance on military service a secret simply because we didn’t want ARMYs in attendance at our Busan concert to start crying. But because there were so many people talking about us and stating things like “They should deserve exemption” or “It is their obligation to serve,” the dispute grew. Even though none of it feels entirely right, I’m at least relieved that I didn’t witness any fans crying during our performance. It was worthwhile to put up with the criticism, Jin said.
