The latest batch of most-watched movies on Netflix includes some old favorites and a new fantasy that shot up the streaming service’s list in its debut week.
Contrary to its name, “Damsel” is not about a young woman in distress; instead, the Netflix original — which was released on March 8 — breaks away from that stereotypical narrative and delivers a fresh and empowering story about someone who can save herself.
Millie Bobby Brown stars as Elodie, who is set to marry a charming prince (Nick Robinson) only to discover that her happily ever after isn’t so happy after all when the prince and his family sacrifice her to a fire-breathing dragon to fulfill a centuries-old arrangement. Elodie finds herself thrown into the depths of a cave but quickly proves that she doesn’t need rescuing.
Another feature that’s riveting Netflix subscribers is “Fear,” a 1996 psychological thriller that delves into the complexities of obsession and manipulation.
The film, which joined the streaming service on March 1, follows the story of a teenage girl named Nicole (played by a then-18-year-old Reese Witherspoon) who becomes infatuated with a possessive young man named David (Mark Wahlberg). As their relationship intensifies, David’s dark and controlling nature begins to surface, leading to a series of increasingly terrifying events.
Meanwhile, those looking for laughs can turn to the “Think Like a Man” movies, inspired by Steve Harvey’s book “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man,” which joined Netflix on March 1.
Only the 2014 sequel is charting, however. The comedy sees the group of friends from the initial 2012 film journey to Las Vegas for a wedding, leading to a wild trip filled with outrageous moments and questionable romantic shenanigans. The dynamic cast includes Kevin Hart, Regina Hall, Gabrielle Union, Taraji P. Henson, and Michael Ealy.
